SAVING GRACES

Saying grace before lunch, Geoffrey used to say, robustly and clearly:
"For what we are about to receive, thank God".
Eric used to mumble: "May God bless this food to our use, and us to his service"
One day Harry Withers (Gunner, Lt. Col. ret'd, and Maths master) asked one of the boys if he knew what Eric said.
"Oh yes, Sir", he replied, "May God bless this food and our useless servants".

I remember other graces being:

before the meal:
BENEDICTUS BENEDICAT
(May the Blessed One give a blessing).

after the meal:
BENEDICTO BENEDICATUR
(Let praise be given to the Blessed One).

These are from the Graces at Queens' College, Cambridge (Eric's alma mater).
